R. Kelly Jailed; This is How Allegations Against Him Compounded.
It’s no
longer news that multiple times Grammy award winner R.Kelly is facing several sexual
harassment accusations and he is currently serving his jail term. Majority of
this accusations are centered on the fact that Robertson Kelly took advantage of teenage girls.
This is not the first time, He has been to court for sexual harassment related charges, for more than two decades, the R&B singer has faced allegations of sexual abuse which has lingered over the years.
Let’s take you
to the beginning of how it all started.
In 1994, the
singer then 27 married his late wife Aaliyah who was 15 years old at a secret
ceremony in Chicago, United States. Vibe magazine later discovered that Aaliyah
had lied on the wedding certificate about her age, listing herself as 18. Due to
this reason, the marriage was annulled in 1995.
They rarely
spoke about their marriage, when she’s asked; Aaliyah always dodged questions
about the nature of her relationship.
"When people ask me, I tell
them, 'Hey, don't believe all that mess,'" she told one interviewer.
"We're close and people took it the wrong way." She was quoted to have said.
Until Aaliyah
died in a plane crash in 2001, R.Kelly did not mention her in his
autobiography, where an author's note explains "certain episodes could not
be included for complicated reasons".
"I will never have that
conversation with anyone. Out of respect for Aaliyah, and her mother and father
who has asked me not to personally." He answered when he was asked about their marriage in
an interview with GQ magazine, BBC reported.
In 1996 his
girlfriend Tiffany Hawkins sued him for the "personal injuries and
emotional distress" he caused her in their relationship. In court Tiffany
said she started having sex with the star at the age of 15 but the relationship
crashed when she was 18 that. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Hawkins demanded
for a $10 million in damages, but accepted a fraction of that amount which was $250,000.
The case was later settled in 1998.
Three years after
the Tiffany Hawkins case was closed; an intern, Tracy Sampson yet again accused
him of inducing her "into an indecent sexual relationship" when she
was 17 years old. She claimed he "treated her as his personal sex object
and cast aside".
"He often tried to control every
aspect of my life including who I would see and where I would go,"
The case was
settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.
2002 was
even worst with multiple charges from being accused of impregnating a minor to
being sued by Montina Woods who alleged that he videotaped them having sex
without her knowledge. The star settled both cases out of court, paying an
undisclosed sum in return for a non-disclosure agreement.
Immediately after
these, he was again charge with 21 counts over child pornography which included
oral sex, urination, intercourse and other sexual acts. The Chicago police
accused him of videotaping each of these acts and enticing a minor to
participate in them. All of the charges related to one girl, she was about 18
years. The said video’s authenticity was verified by the police with help from
the Federal Bureau of Investigation (F.B.I).
The
songwriter and former semi-basket player posted a $750,000 bail and denied the
charges in an interview with MTV and later pleaded not guilty in court. It took
6 years for the case to come to trial, during which time Kelly released his
wildly successful “Trapped in the Closet album” he was nominated for an Image
Award by the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)
amidst widespread criticism. He was found not guilty of the charges.
A 2019 documentary
lead to new charges; the documentary which was a 6 hour-long episodes presents
the most comprehensive look yet at the allegations against him. The final two
segments are particularly harrowing, featuring stark testimony from his
accusers, and footage of parents attempting to rescue daughters they haven't
seen for years.
His record
company dropped him 2 weeks after the release of the video, and his planned
concerts in the United State and New Zealand were both cancelled.
On July
11, 2019, Kelly was arrested
on federal charges alleging sex crimes and obstruction of justice. Kelly faces a total of 18 federal counts, including child
pornography, kidnapping and forced labor, as of July 12, 2019. As a result, he
is currently incarcerated at Metropolitan Correctional Center, Chicago.
